What Students Learned on Sunday, July 13, 2008

Early Childhood:  Two - Four Year Olds

Daniel’s and his three friends obeyed God, and did not bow down to the King’s statue.  They trusted God to take care of them in the firey furnace.  (Daniel 3)

“I will trust in the Lord.”  Psalm 31:6

Starlight Station:  Kindergarten - 5th Grade

Learning to be a servant leader through the life of Joseph.

Main Point:  Servant Leaders Want Others To Succeed!

Bible Verse:  “A peaceful heart leads to a healthy body; jealousy is like cancer in the bones.”  Proverbs 14:30  NLT

Bible Lesson:  Joseph and Potifer’s Wife  (Genesis 39:1-23)

We should do our best to help people around us by protecting them and warning them when they are about to do something wrong.   God wants us to be servant leaders who put each other first.  We can help each other succeed.

What Students Learned on Sunday, July 6, 2008

Early Childhood:  2 - 4 Year Olds Classes

Daniel obeyed God by eating the food God wanted him to eat instead of the food the King offered him.  (Daniel 1)  Obeying God is a way I can show that I love Him.

“Love the Lord your God.”  Matthew 22:37

Starlight Station:  Kindergarten - 5th Grade

Learning to Be a Servant Leader through the life of Joseph

Main Point:  Servant Leaders are careful about what they say!

Bible Verse:  “He who guards his lips, guards his life, but he who speaks rashly will come to ruin.”  Proverbs 13:3

Bible Lesson:  God gave Joseph the ability to understand some special dreams telling how one day he would be a leader over his brothers.  (Genesis 37)  Joseph told the dreams to his brothers, causing anger.  Even though he was telling the truth, he wasn’t careful about how he said it.  God wants us to use words carefully.  Just because something is true doesn’t mean we have to say it.  We need to use our words to help people, not hurt them.  Servant leaders are careful about what they say!

In our skit, Sprocket McKraken, the Director of the Starlight Station Resort tried a “Tell It Like It Is” style of leadership in his space hotel.  He told one of the workers he was smelly, and he told a guest that the brochure for the hotel did not specify that there would be hot water.  He did not solve their problems and he caused some new problems by hurting people.  He learned that just because something is true, does not mean it is helpful or should be said.  He learned that “Servant Leaders are Careful About What They Say!”

What Students Learned on June 1, 2008

Early Childhood:  2 years - Kindergarten

Paul and Barnabas showed love to a lame man and told others about God’s love.  (Acts 14)

“Jesus said, ‘Love each other as I have loved you.’”  (See John 15:12)

First and Second Grades:

Jesus told a story about an unforgiving servant to teach us always to forgive others.  (Matthew 18)

“Forgive as the Lord forgave you.”  Colossians 3:13

Third Grade:

“Encourage the timid, help the weak, be patient with everyone.”  I Thessalonians 5:14

Fourth and Fifth Grades:

Students will begin a unit on “Justice”.   They will  take part in activities to help them understand the difficulties faced by some people with disabilities.  They will read Psalm 146: 7-10 to identify the kinds of people God cares about.  They will study Mark 10 and Luke 18 to discover the difference between the crowd’s and Jesus’ treatment of Bartimaeus, who was blind.  Just and compassionate treatment of people with disabilities reflects God’s love.

Junior Church:  1st - 3rd Grades

Students will continue a unit on “Worship”  God created us in His image and we have an innate longing to worship.  Who, or what, is worshipped is a reflection of our fallen world.   God wants us to make praise and worship of Him a part of our daily life.

Power Point:  I join all creation in praising God.

Bible Lesson:  Jesus overturns the moneychangers tables, heals the lame and challenges the priests to let the children praise and worship him.

Scripture Memory:  “Let all things praise the name of the Lord, because they were created at his command.”

Psalm 148: 5

What Students Learned on May 4, 2008

Early Childhood Classes:  2 Year Olds - Kindergarten

God showed His love to Paul on the road to Damascus by showing Paul that Jesus is God’s Son and by sending Ananias to help him.   (Acts 9)

“For I am not ashamed of the gospel, because it is the power of God for the salvation of everyone who believes.”  Romans 1:16

Fourth and Fifth Grades

Students will begin a four week unit on “fear”and will do activities to discover how fear often causes people to act.  They  study Joshua and Caleb.  They will examine Exodus 1 and Numbers 13-14 to compare the 10 fearful spies to the 2 spies who had confidence in God.  They will look at Romans 8:35, 37-39 to identify reasons to trust God when they feel afraid.

Junior Church:  First - Third Grades   (May 4 and May 11)

Over the next two weeks, students will complete a unit on “The Word”.

Power Point:  The Bible gives us strength and courage for life.

Bible Lesson:  God provided manna for the Israelites.  (Exodus 16,17)  God’s people grumbled because they didn’t trust God to meet their basic needs.  At God’s Word, they were taken care of.  Just as we need food and water to keep our bodies strong and healthy, we need God’s Word to keep our spirits strong and healthy.
